HBL is formerly known as Habib Bank Limited. Habib Bank Limited largest multinational bank. It is the largest bank in Pakistan.HBL was the first commercial bank to be established in Pakistan in 1947. Over the years, Habib Bank Limited has grown its branches and maintained position as the largest bank with over 1600 branches and 1700 ATMs globaly and customer base exceding eight million relationships.Government of Pakistan privatized HBL in 2004 which AKFED aquired 51% of the Bank shareholding and management control. Remaining 41.5% by the Government of Pakistan was derived in April 2015. AKFED continues retain shareholding in HBL while the reamaing shares is held by individuals, local and foreign institutions and funds inclueding CDC Group Plc which holds % percent and international Finance Corporation which holds three percent.

As of 2016, the bank has presence in over 25 countries spanning across four continents, inclueding 1600 branches in Pakistan and 55 branches worldwide. It has operations in Hong Kong, Kenya, Nepal.
